When you date someone from another country, you're not just dating a person; you're dating their culture. And sometimes, those cultures can get hilariously, and beautifully, lost in translation. My relationship with Yana, a woman from Bulgaria, has been filled with these moments.
Our first major misunderstanding happened a few weeks after we started talking on sofiadate. I told her I was going to a "potluck" dinner. The translation came out as something like "luck of the pot," and she became genuinely concerned, thinking I was participating in some strange gambling ritual involving cookware. It took us twenty minutes of confused back-and-forth and a lot of laughter to figure out it just meant a dinner where everyone brings a dish. In return, she once told me she was going to "get peppers for the lyutenitsa." I imagined her just buying a few bell peppers. I was later greeted on a video call by the sight of her entire family in what looked like a full-scale industrial canning operation, roasting hundreds of peppers over an open fire.
But the most significant moment was when I first told her, "I love you." In my American culture, it’s a huge, momentous step. I said it, holding my breath. She paused for a moment and replied, "I respect you very much." My heart sank a little. To my ears, it sounded like a polite rejection. I later learned that in her culture, expressing deep respect and admiration is a profound declaration of affection, often seen as a more serious and foundational step than the sometimes-overused "I love you." That misunderstanding led to one of the most important conversations we’ve ever had about our cultural differences and how we express emotion. Each mistake, each awkward translation, has become a lesson. They've forced us to be more patient, to explain ourselves more clearly, and to laugh at our own assumptions. These little moments of confusion haven't been obstacles; they've been the stepping stones that brought us closer.
